The Best Buy warranty generally lasts longer than a manufacturer warranty and also covers things the manufacturer does not. Not to mention if you buy Best Buy's warranty you can take it back to the store for an exchange rather than sending the item back to the manufacturer.

It's not illegal store/extended warranties have been around forever and are also optional.

Walmart, Target, pretty much every big box store has an extended warranty. So not sure where you intend to shop if that is your determining factor.
