Geek Squad Rip Off | Best Buy review from New York, New York

I am reposting this from my complaint to the Better Business Bureau. I brought my 1 year old Samsung computer to my Best Buy location in Levittown, NY. It was still under warranty. I brought it in because the left clicker of the mouse was not working properly. I declined the back up service. I assumed that I would not need that service done because of the nature of the repair. Best Buy then sent it out to their Geek Squad Repair Center in Hillview, KY. It was at this location where they ran a hardware diagnostic test and it "failed." However, I was given no proof of this test. I received a disturbing phone call. They removed my hard drive without my permission and said it needed to be returned to the manufacturer. It was then that they asked if I would want to do "data recovery." I had no choice at this point. It is like going to the doctor's office with a broken finger then they remove your brain and ask "Would you like me to save some of your memories?" They demanded immediately a $59 diagnostic fee in addition to however much else it will cost. When I signed up for service I specifically wrote on the paper "do not format my hard drive." That basically means do not erase what is on there. I am furious at the lack of communication this business shows and more importantly how they can charge any amount they want and consumers must pay for it. This place deals with thousands of repairs a week and I am sure this malcontent practice goes on continually.

Lets review.

You sent your computer out to get serviced under warranty for a bad mouse. The agent at your store told you to get a data backup because some things do happen. You declined. At the service center the diagnostic software has discovered that your hard drive is failing. Under your warranty they are legally obligated to fix that problem before sending it back to you.

Conclusion. Its your fault you wont have your data now, you declined service before send out and you failed to backup yourself.

Disclaimer: Our service center has employees from the manufactures working there. If the manufacturer wants your defective hard drive they must send it to the manufacture. you agreed to this by the way when you bought the computer and agreed to the end user license agreement.

Best Buy 30 Day Return Policy--You Win

This past summer I purchased around $6k of appliances for new house this summer including $52 of hook-ups for fridge and dishwasher. After contractor install hadn't used hook-ups so returned as I was specifically told I could. When I went back was told I couldn't return them since more than 30 days had passed. So I left, but without buying the new large screen tv and 3 tv braces that I had actually come to purchase. Best Buy, you win. And I am now totally done with you. There are many other places where I can buy a tv.

When you make a purchase at a Best Buy, you are issued a contract at the point of sale. This receipt explains all information in reference to the company's return policy.

In the future, you should read this. If you choose to shop at another retailer, that is your problem.

Someone else will be very happy with the products that you did not purchase. No company wants an ignorant customer.

STOP PICKING ON SIMON. He works hard trying to keep you straight and all you do is give him grief.

Simon lives to help people and you won't listen. What's your problem? Poor Simon tells you what you need to know to shop at Best Buy and you STILL won't listen. Simon tells you to read signs and the back of your receipt and you still won't listen.

Stop making Simon work so hard. It's just not fair to him. He is so wise and people are such dumb@&&e&. Please wise up.

Simon gives his life and his hard work to this site and you don't give anything back to him. Stop shopping at Best Buy or start listening to him.

It's simple. Stop, shop and listen to Simon.

I work in customer service at a best buy location and let me just tell you, you aren't being singled out. Our corporate offices have issued strict policies about no returns outside of 14 or 30 day periods, no exceptions. Our new POS systems also won't allow our managers to override anything outside of a certain window.

So, it's not us being jerks, it's Best Buy as a company cracking down on excessive returns. Most items that come back cannot be re-sold once opened and returned anymore either. So before you take it out on the person behind the counter and the manager on duty, we don't make the rules, we are just required to follow them.

And unfortunately our computer return systems don't care how much money you've spent with us. Other retailers are cracking down on their return policies too, so make sure you pay attention to all the information on that piece of paper the cashier hands you, whether ir be from us or a competitor

Anonymous
#342117

You're right about that, you are free to shop anywhere you like. I await your "Target sucks, they didn't think I was special either" post when you try to return something outside of their return policies.

If Best Buy let you break the rules, they would have to let everyone. How would you feel if the person ahead of you got to return something outside of 30 days and they didn't let you? Your post would read "Best Buy should treat everyone the same boo hoo."

Bottom line is, you wanted to be treated like a diva and now you're mad you were treated like everyone else. Again, I think some maturity would do you a lot of good.

Anonymous
#341998

Perhaps you didn't fully read my post, Simon. Best Buy exercised their policy. I exercised my option to take my money elsewhere. No harm, no foul.

However, if Best Buy was savvy they would take back $52 of product which they can resell, I wouldn't be throwing away $52 of perfectly good product and I would then have bought $1000 worth of tv from Best Buy and not someplace else. So I was being 'sarcastic' when I said that Best Buy won. They lost, I lost but the Target down the road got a big win.

But rules are rules, Simon. And Best Buy stood up for the small print and the role of legal teams everywhere.

Anonymous
#341715

Sorry princess, rules apply to you too. The return policy is on the back of the receipt and on a huge sign by customer service.

There is no excuse for not knowing it.

You can donate all the $ you want to your city's police dept, but if you're flying down the road at 85mph, you're getting a ticket, no matter how special you think you are. I would recommend growing up some.

do you know how to make a dotcom return...? didnt think so.

I apologize for the lack of compassion, but what customers absolutely do not understand is that anything you purchase off of bestbuy.com is run through an entirely different system. In store, employees have very little access to what they can actually do if an online order goes awry, so unfortunately you have to call the 888bestbuy number, wait forever to talk to a person, and then find out there is a 2 hr hold on your order in which we absolutely cannot touch it. I get the frustration, however if youre doing site to store and its for a product that the store doesnt carry or is out of stock of I ALWAYS recommend coming into the store and having a employee place the order for you. Yes, it can be an inconvienence however in store they have many ordering options with faster shipping, and access to any backorder information, etc.

Its just an overall better experience for the customer, trust me. Now as for the giftcard issue, I can't speak for that person, however if someone promised me free money I wouldn't just be hanging around for 2 weeks to hear about it. If you still hate bestbuy, thats fine. Other retailers have the same online and instore ordering systems, so you're not getting away from it unfortunately.

And it seems like you may have some trouble correctly ordering from websites (hence the issue to begin with...? user error is what I'm getting out of it. please correct me if wrong:)) sooo amazon, ebay, other online only shopping systems may not be your cup of tea either. Hope this gives you some kind of clarity, deeper information, whatever.

Even if it just *** you off to no end at least you're aware now. Happy Shopping

Never Best Buy Again Return policey

Tried to return an unopened washer drier stacking kit 6465041 WSTK1 PURCHASED 7/12/2011 WITH RECIEPT for $29.95. Manager on duty would not credit our account because CORPORATE changed their return policey to 30 days. We were never notified of the change at the time of the purchase or anytime after. We have spent $15,000.00 over the last three years and have excellent credit. Will never purchase from Best Buy again. This is not a high tech electrical device that can be damaged even when left in a hot car, or placed in a tub of water overnight. It just bolts to the wall and all parts and packaging were intact.

GEEK Squad - Waste of money | Best Buy review from Dallas, Texas

Hi, I bought a Samsung Infuse mobile phone from a best buy mobile store and also the Geek Squad protection plan for 2 months. But in the middle of second month of the protection plan period, I called customer service and cancelled the plan. I was given assurance by the customer service representative that my services and replacement will still be covered for the first two months since I already paid for the service. As fate would have it, I had some problems with the phone and so went to the nearest BestBuy store (Frisco,TX near Stone briar mall) to get it fixed/replaced. I made three trips to the store and during the first two trips, the mobile stored manager (David) was very helpful and he called the Geek Squad customer care to get my plan reinstated since I already paid for the services. The plan was supposed to be reinstated in 5-7 business days but it never happened. By the time it was reinstated, my two month coverage was up and I couldn't get the phone fixed. During my third trip to the store(was still under coverage), the lady at the mobile store was not helpful at all and she tried to just give me some vague reasons why she cannot help me. So after paying 20$ for two months, 3 trips to the store, wasting 2 hours for every trip and lots of tension , my issue was never resolved. So much for the Geek Squad protection and customer service. I would never recommend anyone BestBuy protection plan again. It is just another way of making money by BestBuy. If you know how to operate a computer, then you probably don't need the help of a Geek Squad member. All he did to help me was do the factory format in my mobile phone which I had already tried. If I had bought this mobile phone at a AT&T store (I had a two year contract), AT&T would have replaced my phone (no questions asked). They had replaced my i-phone earlier without asking any questions. Horrible experience with Geek Squad. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY WITH GEEK SQUAD. Regard, Vivek

That activation fee is for the cell phone company, so that you can ACTIVILY be on their network. You need to read your terms and conditions through the cellphone company....

There's a boat load of other fee's do that the cellphone companys don't tell you about. Like state fees. I recommend not getting mad at a company that's just following policies.

I really like best buy, but it is very surprising to read thisarticle. The seniors are the largest buying group in the country and a lot of us depended on social security as our retirement income, that is, before the government "borrowed" our money and then decided that it was theirs to keep.

Somebody named simon said it was his money. What about us? We paid the darn money and it don't amount to much, but everybody thinks its theirs.

I even read today that now illegals are eligible for our money, too. I will think long and hard about buying something from Best Buy from now on because we can't trust them if they do business like this.

Anonymous
#353596

Someone told me about this site and I had to see for myself. So, from what I can tell, what seniors worked for is no longer theirs to collect on, but it belongs to people who won't work for a day, much less all of they're lives.

I can't believe what I am reading. How can anyone say that the money we paid for our retirement is theirs?

Not only that. Let them get to where they need to buy medicines and pick up the bills that social security doesn't pay.

I believe that would shock theirselves and know what hard decisions it is to spend on something like a phone. Brother, we could be like those people who get free phones because they won't work or came to this country illegally, but we worked for what we have, even if it is just a little.

Bestbuy in store customer service suck | Best Buy review from Willingboro, New Jersey

I bought Asus Laptop for $749.00, as soon as I got home, I notice the crack on the screen, I then return the laptop (the very next day) to a best buy near my house (Easton Road, Willow Grove Pennsylvania). Sales associate/ or customer service refuse to refund or exchange defective Asus laptop because of the crack on the screen, (They basically told me TOUGH) their reason was "The box is in good condition" except ofcourse the screen is damage. I ask to speak to a manager, however, for some reason sales associate said that no manager is available and they will tell me the same thing. The conversation escalate into an argument, first because my laptop is a day old and they refuse to take back their defective product, they also decline to replace, refund or fix (A day old defective product), second, they were just very rude and unprofessional. I was very disappointed and upset with best buy in willow grove and I would never buy anything from them again. Never again Best Buy.

Bye Bye Best Buy

I have paid my final visit to Best Buy after terrible customer service in West Nashville Tenenssee. To begin with, I looked without success for a salesperson to help navigate the differences between satellite radios on display. After making my best guess, I waited at check out while the only cashier left her post and accompanied another customer across the sales floor to point out which alternative item might be best. At least five minutes later, the line of customers was at least 10 deep. Another five minutes and cheerless female manager showed up to open a second register. The line of customers was now 15-20 deep. I expressed my difficulty finding any rep to assist me and it was clear Jesse the manager could not have cared less. She was hostile and let me know what an inconvenience it was for her to come work a register. In this economy i can definitely find another retailer that respects their customers and who wants our business and hard-earned dollars. Best Buy will no longer be an option when I have gifts to buy.
